Bridging the Knowledge Gap in Tobacco Harm Reduction: Insights from Global Action’s NYC Event

Grateful to Global Action to End Smoking (GA) for the kind invitation to last week’s exclusive gathering in New York City. Liz enjoyed joining the conversation on how we can better support people who want to quit smoking — and to contribute insights on the importance of tobacco harm reduction.

One highlight of the event was Global Action’s announcement of a new grant to Northwell Health, aimed at advancing tobacco harm reduction in clinical settings. This work will help deliver science-based, compassionate care to more people, where it’s needed most. Learn more HERE > https://lnkd.in/edEE6mUx

A key theme throughout the event was the critical knowledge gap in tobacco harm reduction—especially the misperceptions surrounding reduced-risk products and the lack of education among healthcare providers. This gap limits access to essential information for people who want to quit, including pregnant women, older adults, incarcerated individuals, and those in the military.

As Lead Clinical Researcher at ARAC, Elizabeth DeMartini was honored to represent the ARAC team and contribute to discussions that directly align with our mission. ARAC is actively working to bridge the misperception gap around reduced-risk products by engaging nurses and advocating for systemic change in clinical and professional education. It was a natural fit to be part of this event, which so clearly emphasized the urgent need for better-informed healthcare providers.

Liz had the pleasure of connecting with several Global Action team members and exploring how ARAC’s work could align with their mission. We're looking forward to continuing the conversation and building potential collaborations.

Thank you again, Global Action, for the opportunity to represent ARAC and be part of such a thoughtful and forward-looking event. See included photos of Liz speaking with VP Programs Erik Augustson and Global Action’s BOD member Dyborn Chibonga.
