Introduction
Quitting smoking is one of the most significant steps toward better health, but for many, it's a difficult road. New options like oral nicotine products (ONP) are gaining popularity as smoking cessation tools, with flavored varieties leading the charge. Recent research has shown that flavored nicotine products—particularly mint, fruit and other novel flavors—could play an essential role in helping smokers reduce or quit their cigarette use altogether. But how effective are these products? A six-month prospective cohort study aimed to answer this question by investigating how different flavors of nicotine pouches and lozenges influence smoking habits.
Overview of Key Concepts
ONPs like pouches, gums, and lozenges offer an alternative to cigarette smoking. These products deliver nicotine without the harmful chemicals in cigarettes and are available in mint, fruit and other novel flavors. Researchers have highlighted flavors, especially non-traditional ones like fruit, as a critical factor in smokers choice to switch to these alternatives, possibly making them more effective than traditional quitting methods.
Main Findings
The Rogue® Longitudinal Switching Study enrolled 1,393 adult smokers and tracked their flavored pouch, gum and lozenge use over six months. The goal was to assess whether fruit and novel flavored nicotine products helped reduce combustible cigarette consumption or lead to quitting more than mint flavored nicotine products. Participants had access to a range of mint, fruit and other novel-flavored Rogue® nicotine products. The study produced some interesting trends:
Quit Rates: Among predominant fruit/novel-flavored product use, 15.4% quit smoking by the end of six months, compared to 11.6% of mint-flavored users. This suggests that fruit/novel-flavored ONPs might be more effective in encouraging complete cessation.
Reduction in Smoking: Pouch, gum and lozenge products in any flavor helped smokers reduce cigarette use. Fruit and novel-flavored product users demonstrated a better result, with a 50% average reduction in cigarettes per day (CPD) compared to 48.4% for mint users.
Methodology
Study participants were current smokers, aged 21 or older, from a market research panel. They were provided Rogue® pouch, lozenge and gum products and completed surveys at the start, and again at months 1, 2, 4, and 6. Participants could choose their preference of product forms and flavors.
The researchers then analyzed how flavor choice impacted smoking behaviors, with a focus on both reduction in cigarette use and complete cessation.
Implications of the Research
The findings suggest that a variety of available ONP flavors can aid in reducing smoking and complete cessation. Fruit/novel-flavored products, in particular, showed a slightly greater impact on helping people quit. While mint flavors still contributed to cigarette reduction, they did not appear as effective in supporting complete cessation.
The study also confirmed a trend seen in other research: flavored nicotine products play a crucial role in smoking reduction and quitting. Smokers seem more likely to transition away from cigarettes when given a choice of a variety of appealing flavors, especially non-traditional ones like fruit.
The Impact of Flavor Variety
An intriguing aspect of this study is how much difference flavor variety made. While mint has long been a popular choice in smoking cessation products, the success of fruit/novel-flavored ONPs suggests that novelty and a variety of flavors may keep users more engaged and committed to reducing or quitting their cigarette habit. This is especially important as the fight against smoking continues to evolve with new, alternative nicotine products.
